Drum size, spin speed, energy rating and the programmes that make laundry easier.
A washing machine is used several times a week for ten years or more, so it is worth choosing one that fits your household and your space.
Drum size
- 6 to 7kg: one or two people
- 8 to 9kg: a family of three or four
- 10kg and above: larger families, or if you wash duvets and bedding at home
Spin speed
A higher spin speed (1400rpm or more) removes more water, so clothes dry faster on the line or in a dryer. 1200rpm is fine if you mostly air-dry delicate items.
Energy and water
The UK energy label grades machines from A to G and shows energy use per 100 cycles and water use per cycle. An A or B rated machine costs noticeably less to run over its life.
Useful programmes
- Quick wash (15 to 30 minutes) for lightly worn clothes
- Eco 40-60 for everyday loads at the lowest running cost
- Allergy or steam programmes for bedding and baby clothes
- Delay start, so the cycle finishes when you get home
Washer dryer or separate dryer?
A washer dryer saves space but dries smaller loads than it washes. If you have room, a separate tumble dryer (heat pump models are the most efficient) handles bigger loads faster.
Check the space
Standard freestanding machines are about 60cm wide and 85cm high. Measure the depth too, and allow a few centimetres behind for the hoses and a little space for the door to open fully.
