Work out the wattage you need, choose between inverter, portable, diesel and solar, and learn how to run a generator safely.
A generator keeps the essentials running during a power cut, powers tools on site and makes camping or caravan trips more comfortable. The right one depends on what you want to power and where you will use it.
1. Add up the wattage you need
List the appliances you want to run at the same time and add up their running watts. Then check which item has the highest starting watts: fridges, pumps and power tools briefly draw two to three times their running power when they start. Your generator’s rated output should cover the running total, and its maximum output should cover that start-up surge.
- Phones, laptops, lights and a router: around 500W
- Fridge freezer, lights and a TV: roughly 1.5 to 2.5kW
- Power tools on site or a small workshop: 3kW and above
2. Pick the right type
- Inverter generators produce clean, stable power that is safe for laptops and TVs. They are quieter and more fuel-efficient, ideal for home back-up and camping.
- Portable petrol generators give more power for the money and suit DIY, events and occasional back-up.
- Diesel generators are built for long run times and heavy use on farms and work sites.
- Solar generators and portable power stations are silent and fume-free, and can be used indoors. They store less energy, so they suit lighter loads.
3. Check run time, noise and outlets
Look at the run time at 25% or 50% load, the noise level in decibels (around 55 to 60dB is comfortable for camping) and the sockets: UK 230V outlets, USB ports and a 12V output are all useful. Electric start is easier than a pull cord if you will use it often.
4. Stay safe
- Only run petrol or diesel generators outdoors, well away from doors and windows, and fit a carbon monoxide alarm at home.
- Never connect a generator directly to your home wiring. A qualified electrician must fit a proper changeover switch.
- Let the engine cool before refuelling and store fuel in approved containers.
