Screen size for your room, 4K and HDR explained, and the smart features that matter.

With so many sizes and screen types, choosing a TV can feel complicated. Start with your room and the way you watch, then compare the details.

Screen size and viewing distance

Measure from your sofa to where the TV will sit. A simple rule for 4K TVs: divide that distance in centimetres by about 1.2 to get a comfortable screen size in centimetres.

  • Bedroom or kitchen, 1.5 to 2m away: 32 to 43 inch
  • Average living room, 2 to 2.5m: 50 to 55 inch
  • Larger rooms, 2.5m and more: 65 inch and above

Resolution and picture

4K Ultra HD is now the standard for screens from 43 inches, giving sharp detail on streaming services. HDR (HDR10, HLG or Dolby Vision) adds brighter highlights and deeper colours when the content supports it. A higher refresh rate (100Hz or 120Hz) makes fast sport and games look smoother.

Smart features

Check that the apps you use are built in, such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Netflix and Prime Video, and whether the TV supports Freeview Play for UK channels. Voice control and casting from your phone are handy extras.

Sound and connections

Thin TVs have small speakers, so a soundbar makes a big difference to dialogue. Look for HDMI ARC or eARC to connect one with a single cable, plus enough HDMI ports for your games console and set-top box.

Energy rating

Larger and brighter screens use more electricity. The UK energy label shows the yearly consumption in kWh, which helps you compare running costs.
